Mama Kat's Losin It Weekly Writing Assignment

Miss has asked me to do this before and I keep putting it off.  I figured today is the day to stop, LOL.  Mainly because I'm feeling cranky and would love to share with you a story or two.

The Prompts:
1.) Lou Holtz (don’t ask me who that is) once said, “life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it.” Do you believe this? Describe a time when you feel like you could have responded a different way and produced a different outcome.

2.) I miss the friend you used to be.

3.) The most unbelievable blue eyes you’ve ever seen…

4.) The craziest reason I ever got in trouble as a child.

5.) What would you ask forgiveness for?

Like Miss, I'm going with 4, because I think each of us has a crazy parent story...although Miss' are the craziest I've seen.  Maybe that's why she's normal.

One of the two reasons I ALWAYS got into trouble as a child, involved my niece.  My oldest sister would drop off her daughter every chance she could, meaning most of her life she was at our house more than her own.  I was 9 when she was born, and by the time I was 12, I became her babysitter.  I was told to get onto her for misbehaving as I was in charge.

Except whenever I did get on to her, I got into trouble.

Yup.  And then they'd turn around and tell me to watch her and make sure she minds...hmmm.

One instance that stands out the most was the day she took a small toy sized metal shovel to the tile floor.  My dad lays carpet, tile, you name it, for a living and he spent a lot of time putting together a mosaic in my parents living room under their wood stove.  I'll have to take a pic some day and post it, he's got covered wagons, cowboys and the state of Oklahoma all made in tile.  It's not perfect, but it shows my dad's cooky side and we all love it.  But I digress.

I was a teen at the time, Bo and I were in the living room watching tv with my niece who was 8 or 9, while my parents, sisters and their spouses were in the kitchen just a few feet away chatting.  She picks up the little shovel and begins hitting the tile with it.  The scoop part of the shovel was going straight down over and over on the tile, very loudly I might add, and I saw pieces of grout and tile fly into the air.  I told her twice to stop and all she did was laugh at me and say "You can't tell me what to do".  So I yelled over the banging at the grown ups that she was chipping the tile and she wouldn't stop when I told her to and this is what my mother said.

"K. stop doing that right this minute!  Nikki leave her alone!"

Oh yeah.  Bo looked at me and I said "See this is what I put up with on a daily basis".  I'd told him and our friend Sarah how this happened all the time, but they didn't quite believe me until that day.  All we could do was laugh, because it didn't do any good to point out that I got in trouble for doing what I was told and for keeping her from destroying something.  I'd still get yelled at.

I think if I brought this up today, my mother would deny it or say she can't remember ever doing that.  And the worst part of it is that NO ONE stood up for me, ever.  Even though both sisters and my father witnessed it, they kept their mouth shut...except Bo when we were married and they were still doing this.

Like when she was 10 and dropped my other niece when she was a year old, and I got in trouble for getting on to her by both my mother and sister, whose child was screaming after being dropped.  Since I was married and living on my own I had no problem telling both of them to fuck off and open their damn eyes because a child just got hurt and instead of making sure she was ok, they were chewing me out for trying to protect her.  Yes I did tell them to fuck off, and it felt GOOOOOD.  I didn't talk to my family for over two weeks, and when we did finally talk, no one apologized to me.

The other thing I got in trouble for?  My anxiety.  My parents thought I was throwing up and having 'fits', as they called my panic attacks, just for attention, even though I clearly did this any time I had to leave the house or have people pay attention to me.  To this day, my mom makes jokes about how I could throw up within seconds of being told I was going somewhere.  With a smile, and a laugh.

And they wonder why I have problems, hahaha.

Now don't forget to head over to Mama Kat's and link up with your blog post URL!

Yikes!! I can understand your anger and frustration with it all. I'm surprised that you talked to them again!
Hopefully things are better now.

Dang! That's messed up! It is kinda funny your mom laughs about your ability to throw up as a child. LOL. (sad too-ha)

Jackie - It was tough especially when that day wasn't spoken about and was pretty much ignored. But after that, they started treating me like an adult. It's all good now, even though its not easy looking back, I know they did what they thought was best. I was just the odd ball kid they didn't know how to handle.

Angelia - People do laugh, it doesn't bother me really, ;) no worries, but from my side and being in it, it's hard to laugh. You know? It's a horrible feeling...however she's right, sometimes she barely got the words out and up came my cookies. It was very useful on people I didn't like though;), LOL. Thanks for stopping by!!
